SUMMARY:MCA Approved HELM (Operational)
DESCRIPTION:The emphasis throughout the course is to develop understanding of human factor concepts and understanding of how human actions influence\, for good or ill\, the practical application of those concepts. This understanding\, properly applied\, then enhances the safe operation of the ship and the care of all persons on board. Aimed primarily at junior officers and those seeking their first watchkeeping certificates\, this course also provides invaluable training for shore-based staff and non-deck or engineering personnel\, such as pursers or hotel services people. \nThis is a three-day multi-activity course that provides delegates with a programme of approved training to control the operation of the ship and care for persons on board at the operational level by the application of management\, leadership and team working skills. \nThe course highlights issues such as fatigue\, stress\, cultural\, educational and linguistic differences in the vessels operational team and how they have been the root cause of many losses and casualties. We use MAIB Marine accident investigation reports to tease out issues leading to these losses and casualties. \nThe Operational level course is designed to comply with the requirements as set out in the IMO mandatory requirements the competence ‘leadership and management skills’ set out in Tables A-II/1\, A-III/1 and A-III/6 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978\, as amended (2010); and\, when combined with the completion of an MNTB Training Record Book (Deck/Engineering) or approved simulator training/assessment\, the knowledge\, understanding and proficiencies for Bridge/Engine-room resource management set out in Tables A-II/1 and A-III/1 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978\, as amended (2010). \nThe course meets the Operational level syllabus requirements contained in the MNTB syllabus. Course duration is three days.

SUMMARY:MCA Approved Engine Course 1 (AEC 1)
DESCRIPTION:About the AEC 1 Course\nThe aim of the Approved Engine Course 1 is to provide a basic theoretical and practical\nunderstanding of marine engines\, their operation\, basic maintenance\, along with care and\nrespect towards others and the environment.\nThe course meets the requirements of the MCA Small Commercial Vessel Code\, Large Vessel\nCode and Workboat Code giving the basic training to engineer officers who want to further\ntheir careers on “small vessels” (Fishing Vessels\, Yachts\, Tugs\, Workboats\, Standby\, Seismic\nSurvey\, Oceanographic Research Vessels and Government Patrol Vessels). The full MCA AEC 1\nsyllabus is available on the MCA website.\nWith increasing power to weight ratios and sophisticated control systems\, knowing how to\noperate engines safely and within their parameters\, has never been more important. A good\nworking knowledge of an engines makeup\, associated systems and its correct operation is vital.\nCorrectly tightening up a nut and bolt to changing a fuel filter are all equally important tasks. The\nskills gained will help with regular servicing and preventative maintenance tasks. With this\nimproved engine confidence\, earlier fault recognition and increased longevity from the plant\nfollows. This course will emphasise best practices throughout\, safely.\nDelivery is from marine going personnel with extensive time spent on the water. There is no\nsubstitute for experience and here at The Seamanship Centre\, all our instructors are time served\nprofessionals. With the largest fishing port in Ireland on our doorstep\, lots of opportunities to\nexperience at first hand larger vessels immediately outside the college door is an added attraction.\nAs this course is MCA approved\, a high standard must be met and to that end we have\ndeveloped a training plan to meet with the specified areas of the MCA syllabus program. We\nhope to cover additional topics of study as the course progresses and hope you will gain some\nnew skills and knowledge to make your time on the water safer\, more enjoyable and successful. \nAssessment is through practical demonstration and examination throughout the course. The\npurpose of this is to ensure key points are understood in the various learning areas. There is a\nwritten examination at the end and time will be given if needed to work on any areas left\nunclear for everyone. We are here to train and promote best practices at all times. You will leave\nhaving gained a greater appreciation for engines with a thorough grounding in engine principles\, working safely\nand developing fundamental marine engine and system knowledge. SUMMARY:MSO Approved Maritime Leadership & Teamworking Skills.
DESCRIPTION:Learning Outcome \nBy the end of the training course the learner will be able to control the operation of the ship and care for persons on board at the operational level by the application of resource management\, leadership and team working skills. \nIn this course we will explore a broad spectrum of the human condition and find out what makes us tick. The course is very effective in promoting an awareness of the issues that effect our ability to do the job in a safe and effective fashion day after day. \nWe explore Marine accidents and try to pick up the thread of where it started to go wrong\, pretty soon common human element issues arise and we can find out how we might best manage the safe navigation using the human resource and ship board resource available to us.

SUMMARY:ISA National Powerboat. RYA Level 2
DESCRIPTION:National-Powerboat-Certificate Coastal-Nav-for-Small-Boats Coastal-Nav-for-Small-Boats Advanced-Powerboat-Certificate \nRYA Powerboat courses are primarily for those using small powered craft such as RIBs\, dories and sportsboats that don’t generally undertake long or offshore passages. This is a 2 Day Practical Course. \nThe types of commercial craft requiring this level certification are typically: \n\ncharter fishing boats\,\nsmall passenger launches\,\nthrill ride operators\,\nharbour patrol launches\,\nconstruction site safety boats\,\nrecreational boat users etc.\n\nIf you will be using larger boats with accommodation and the capacity to cruise or work further offshore you are likely to need a certificate within the motor cruising programme such as Day Skipper\, Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster™ Offshore. \nIf you need a Powerboat Level 2 certificate in order to work on a commercial craft subject to the MCA’s codes of practice\, you will need to get it commercially endorsed. \nYou can then work on commercial vessels up to 24 meters in length\, operating in category 6 waters – that is up to 3 miles from a nominated departure point in fine weather and daylight hours. \n\nPre-course experience –  None or may be preceded by Level 1\nAssumed Knowledge  – None\nCourse Content  – All you need to know for self-sufficient power-boating at a basic level. Course includes launching\, mooring\, anchoring and recovery plus all the boat driving skills required for basic competence in a powerboat\nAbility after course  – Self-sufficient power boater in the right conditions\, aware of own limitations and those of craft\nMinimum duration  – 2 day course or shorter assessment for experienced drivers (half to one day).\nMinimum age  – For the Level 2 course the minimum age is 12\, but a commercial endorsement cannot be obtained until the age of 17
