1 Introduction
1.1 Aims and main learning objectives
The aims of this Course is to give the participants awareness through theoretical and practical training to encourage Confined Space Awareness and perform activities in a safe manner in the environment of a port facility, on board ship or any hazardous space in accordance with Irish Legislation.
Content:
 The Delegates understand the relevant legislation and Code of Practice for Working in Confined Spaces.
 The Delegates are able to demonstrate understanding of what a confined space is.
 The Delegates understand the risks and hazards associated with a confined space.
 The Delegates are able to demonstrate understanding of the Permit to Work System for Confined Spaces. Appreciation of the different types of atmospheres.
 Use of gas detection equipment in hazardous atmospheres.
 Diseases and personal hygiene associated with confined spaces.
 The Delegates are able to demonstrate an understanding of rescue techniques from an enclosed space. Use of Personal Protection Equipment, i.e. ropes, harnesses and man riding hoists.
 Different types of full working Breathing Apparatus and ancillary equipment.
 Safe systems of work for entry into confined spaces.
 Methods of communication.
 Manning levels.
 Emergency procedures

 To provide knowledge and understanding on identifying a confined space.
 The legislation associated with working within a confined space.
 To provide the knowledge and understanding of the risks and hazards associated with a confined space.
 To provide a thorough understanding of the dangers of confined spaces.
