Duration of the Course
The course is a one day course commencing at 09:00 hrs and finishing at 17:30, with a total of 6.5 hours of tuition
Course Aims
The one day course has been developed so that learners will have a basic concept of ship stability, particularly with respect to the centre of gravity, centre of buoyancy, GM and GZ Curves. The course aims to make learners aware of dangerous situations that can adversely affect stability such as FSE shifting of weights and the effect on the C of G and the GM, angle of loll, also what good stability and bad stability is.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course the learner will be able to understand basic ship stability in relation to
- Centre of Gravity.
- Stable, Unstable and Neutral Equilibrium.
- Flotation
- Box Shaped Vessel Centre of Gravity (C of G)
- Centre of Buoyancy
- The Metacentre (M)
- First Principles (GZ)
- How to Find Righting Moment (Moment of Statical Stability MSS)
- GZ Curves
- Angle of Loll
- Stability Hazards (Things that will reduce stability)
- How to Eliminate or Counteract a Negative GM.
- Calculation of KG
- Adding, Shifting or Discharging a Weight
- Hydrostatic Tables
The learner will be able to demonstrate understanding of the above by solving problems using the below formula.
