RIB Capsize and Righting.
This is a one day course. The course has good course notes for home study and practical elements and is delivered hands-on with full candidate participation. The course is aimed at professional Patrol boat, Rescue boat, Workboat crews however there is a lot of good information and seamanship techniques here and the course is open to the public.
Course content.
Meteorology and weather conditions in the local sphere. Interaction with headlands, tides, estuary waters, sand bars and shallow water.
Vessel Trim and loading.
General safety equipment. Personal safety equipment. Boats Safety equipment. Self-righting equipment.
Preparing the boat.
Stowing and making fast the boats equipment, day’s work equipment and crew equipment.
Passage planning and weather planning.
Close quarters boat handling, interaction between vessels, interaction vessel and bank.
Coming alongside another vessel, making fast to another vessel, towing alongside, Girding (or Girting)
Squat and sinkage.
Running before a sea, heading a sea, beam seas and quartering a sea.
Crossing a bar, Breaking waves.
Loss of reserve buoyancy and down flooding.

Practical in water training and shore based discussions.
De-brief.
Practical.
The practical element includes multiple capsize and re-righting in seawater, using full ppe and practicing buoyancy control while in the water and under the capsize hull, entry and exit from the capsize hull, methods of climbing on to the capsize hull and self-rescue. Deploying the self-righting gear to right the boat. Then we have lots of practice in getting back in the boat and taking casualties back on the boat.

RIB 6.5m (fully equipped & operational) no self- righting kit.
RIB FRC 7.5m with operational self-righting kit (engines removed for demo’s)
Lorry mounted crane or deck crane.
