Course Content
The syllabus is divided into three sections and 12 topics as listed below:
Section 1: Basic Principles
Topic 1. Basic principles of hydrostatics and related terms.
Topic 2. Fineness of hull form and resistance to forward motion.
Topic 3. Statical stability.
Topic 5. Loading, discharging and shifting weights. The effect of slack tanks on the centre of gravity.
Section 2: List and Related Problems
Topic 6. List.
Topic 7. The inclining experiment.
Section 3: Curves of Statical Stability
Topic 8. Curves of statical stability
Topic 9. Stability data supplied to yachts.
Section 4: Loll, Dry Docking and Longitudinal Stability
Topic 10. Angle of Loll
Topic 11. Dry-docking
Topic 12. Longitudinal Stability
Course Aims
The aim of this course is to enable Masters to understand:
- Basic principles of hydrostatics and related terms
- List and related problems
- Curves of statical stability
- Loll and related problems
- Dry docking and longitudinal stability
Assessment will be by a written 2.5 hour examination of five questions. The exam consists of six questions to ensure the learner has gained knowledge over a range of subjects.
